Minimise Your Capital Gains Tax Liability – Expert Guidance You Can Trust

Selling a property, shares, or your business? At Accountancy Business & Taxation Services (ABTS), we provide specialist Capital Gains Tax (CGT) advice to help individuals and business owners reduce their tax bill legally while ensuring full compliance with HMRC rules.

Our experienced tax team delivers clear, practical strategies tailored to your circumstances — whether you’re planning a sale, considering restructuring, or need support with a recent disposal.

What is Capital Gains Tax?

Capital Gains Tax is the tax you pay on the profit (the “gain”) you make when you sell or dispose of an asset that has increased in value. It applies to individuals, trustees, and personal representatives, but not usually to companies (which pay Corporation Tax instead).

You only pay CGT on the gain above your annual tax-free allowance. Without careful planning, a significant portion of your hard-earned profit can go to HMRC.

Important Deadlines

UK residential property: You must report the sale and pay any CGT due within 60 days of completion.

Other assets: Gains are reported via your Self Assessment tax return by 31 January following the end of the tax year.

Missing these deadlines can result in penalties and interest.

When Does Capital Gains Tax Apply?

CGT is triggered on the disposal of assets such as:

  • Residential property (second homes, buy-to-let properties, holiday homes)
  • Shares and investments (including stocks, unit trusts, and cryptocurrency)
  • Business assets (sale of a company, goodwill, or business premises)
  • Personal possessions worth over £6,000 (e.g. artwork, jewellery, antiques)
  • Land and commercial property

Even transferring assets as a gift can trigger a CGT liability in many cases.

Current UK CGT Rates & Allowances (2026/27 Tax Year)

  • Annual Exempt Amount: £3,000 per individual (tax-free gains up to this amount)
  • Standard CGT rates:
    • 18% for basic rate taxpayers (on the portion of the gain within the basic rate Income Tax band)
    • 24% for higher and additional rate taxpayers

Business Asset Disposal Relief (BADR): Qualifying business gains are taxed at a flat 18% rate (up to a £1 million lifetime limit).

Note: Rates and allowances are correct as of June 2026. Always verify the latest figures with HMRC, as tax rules can change.
